The Powhatan Tribe

They lived in what is known today as Eastern-Virginia.
They were named after a major river which was also called Powhatan. In 1607
there was a total of six tribes.

The Powhatan's lived in Virginia for 15,000 years their land was called Tsenacommocah. They always out-lined their land. Thier houses were
called Longhouses. Their longhouses were made
of bark,trees,and branches.Several families  lived
in one longhouse. The women built the longhouses
and also owned them.

The women had chores like making pottery, wooden
plates, gardening, and gathering food like nuts and berries.
The children were raised by there mothers until they
learned the native ways. The boys were taught by
their fathers too hunt, fish, and make tools and also weapons.
The girls were taught by there mothers too garden, cook,
and make things.

Powhatan's showed whites how 2 plant gardens(indian way)
The Powhatan's grew grapes, corns, pumpkins, squash,
sunflowers, and beans. After the women made their
pottery they laid the beans in the sun  too dry. They only
ate food they could provide for themselves. The men hunted
deer, bear, racoon, rabbits, squirrels, and most wild life.

The natives made bows and arrows out of
wood and rock. The silverware was made out of seashells,
rock, and wood. They made pots and dishes
out of clay that was then hardened.Making
the weapons using two rocks is called flinting.
Their gardening tools were made of deer
antler,rocks,and bones.

Some people of  the Powhatan tribe today is in Oklahoma
and Canada. There are annual events such as Juried
American Indian Arts Festival which is located next too
the Mississppi River. The modern day movie Pocahontas
was named after the Powhatan tribe.
